The Modern Atlanta Home Tour is a two day self-guided tour of homes in Atlanta. The architecture tour is mostly private residences, but occasionally a few commercial buildings are featured. It is usually held on a weekend in mid June – MA was founded in 2007. The tour is the finale of “Design is Human Week” – a week of speakers and events focusing on design, sustainability, and innovation.
Project: Olympic Residence
Location: 238 Olympic Place Decatur, GA 30080
Architect: Lightroom Inc.
General Contractor: Cablik Enterprises
Interior Design: Suzanne Seymour
Landscape: Core Landscape Group
Square Footage: 5,108 sq ft.
4 levels:
– Basement: Living room, bedroom, bathroom, laundry, bedroom with attached bathroom, detached two-story garage
– living room, kitchen, office, half bathroom, dining room, play room
– master bedroom, master bathroom, 2 bedrooms with Jack & Jill bathroom
– enclosed stairwell up to a roof deck with covered & uncovered spaces
Roughly, the house is an “L” shape. The office (1st floor), children’s bedrooms (2nd floor), and roof deck occupy the front wing of the house. the “back corner” is the living room/kitchen/stairwell… and the dining room (1st floor) & master suite (2nd floor) are on the right wing.
A long window clad hallway into the main space:
The hallway opens up to a living room and kitchen combination with access to the basement tucked behind the left kitchen wall:
Turning back around… front door on the left, access to the front office on the right of the fireplace:
Walking around the fireplace, a home office is located at the front of the home:
Back near the living room, the hall down to the dining room looks very similar to the first hallway at the entry door:
On the left, a half bath off of the “dining room” hallway:
At the end of the hallway is the sort-0f removed/private dining room. This is not a rectangular room, the left wall slopes outward toward the camera.
View of the garage and back yard from the dining room:
Back in the main space, looking at the three story kitchen:
Another home where the stairs are located behind the kitchen wall! Possibly a pantry (or, in this case, used as a child’s playroom) is located off to the side. Also, notice the walnut waterfall edge, kitchen island.
Stairs up to the second floor:
Finishing detail between the drywall and stair treads:
Second floor landing with lots of hallways:
Hallways mimicking the first floor: right to the kid’s bedrooms, left to the master suite:
Taking a left, through the door – the master bathroom is on the left.
The master bedroom with the closet toward the back of the hall (above the dining room):
Wall of floor to ceiling windows (view from the master hallway to the children’s wing):
Walking down the kid’s hallway with two bedrooms on the right:
A Jack and Jill bathroom between the rooms:
Spinning around to the private area of the bathroom:
Bedroom #2 – the left wall is at an angle:
Very minor detail between finishings:
Looking back down the children’s wing:
Moving upstairs to the third level (which is the roof living space/deck):
Again, this isn’t lens distortion, the end of the building is at an angle.
The stairs leading down to the basement from the kitchen:
A nice, cozy daylight basement. There is a bedroom and bathroom on the back left wall and laundry and another bedroom down the hallway to the right:
Basement bedroom #1, featuring what looks like a murphy bed:
View to the back yard with emergency egress through the storefront window wall:
Second basement bedroom’s bathroom:
Looking back at the basement living room:
The back of the home with detached garage. I don’t know what is in that second story space above the garage.
A very different home that maximizes exterior surfaces. I wonder if the designers wanted to emphasize the hallways and the walk from space to space. As far as finishings, the siding looks like it is weathering unevenly unfortunately. It was nice to see a home that had a office or flex space integrated into the design. Since we work from home, its nice to see an office that just isn’t a converted bedroom.
