Some introductions are in order – We have moved our attention upstairs from the kitchen and foyer: to the guest bathroom!
Our guest bathroom is fairly original except, I suspect, the floor tile. My plan is to just temporarily update the bathroom. I will Paint all of the paintable surfaces (cabinet, baseboard, window & door trim, door, walls) and spray paint the fixtures. I think a little update will be nice for guests in the meantime – before we really figure out how to renovate the space.
Get ready for a more detailed fixture tour:
Lovely faucet. I like that it has a single handle… but the ball shape is difficult to use.
1980’s vanity lighting against green walls. I refuse to change these bulbs when they blow out – I’ll just eventually change the light fixture.
Original rough hewn cedar with a view of impossible to clean spiderwebs and leaves:
The shower and sink are made of this faux marble type material. It’s not plastic… it’s definitely kind-of a stone… but looks fake or man made. Perhaps it’s a composite. It’s a shame, because a solid tub/shower surround is nice – it would just be nicer in solid white. The sink is also made of this material. The shower really wasn’t that bad – I’ve seen much worse patterns & colors in other 70’s/80’s houses… it just looks dated. While were at it, let’s add re-caulking to the list – not because it was failing, the caulk was just sloppy.
The “brushed brass” door knob. (Which are featured all over the house):
Hinges from the door and cabinet:
I don’t know what happened here to the cabinet handles or why only one looks really bad:
I don’t have a specific overall photos of these items: brown hollow core door, brown vanity, & brown baseboards… but they did exist and needed a coat of paint!
There are obviously more temporary things that can be done in this bathroom – like add a frame around the existing mirror to hide flaws or replace the shower head… but as I stated before, the other small painting updates will help – and I can always just hide the tub with a shower curtain.
Next up… tackling painting the baseboards, trim, and vanity! (…and also painting the adjoining hallway).
Here are some links to some of the bathroom’s temporary updates:

Part 1) The gust bathroom & hall get a coat of paint
Part 2) Updating old cabinets with wood filler
Part 3) Painting hollow core doors & spray painting hardware
Your sink and counters are cultured marble. I have the same thing in my 80’s house, except I have seashell / scalloped – shaped sinks instead of decent oval ones. You’re lucky. I also have 3-hole faucets, but the handles are spaced 18 inches apart. Yep, you read that right! You CAN paint cultured marble. I’ve been doing some research into it and have come across some instructional posts on it; the only reason I haven’t done it yet is because I’m trying to figure out how to cut out and replace those god-awful sinks…
LOVE your site by the way!
Thanks, Lauren! A good amount of research is knowing the correct term – so thank you for letting me know the sink is “cultured marble”! I was kind of surprised that the sinks in our house were not scalloped: especially since I’ve seen photos of other homes in the neighborhood with that type of… “design”. We might eventually replace the vanity, but perhaps we can glaze our exiting tub/shower surround!
