This week is the week of the Modern Atlanta Home Tour. With it, come a lot of great events everyone can attend (often times for free, or are included in the cost of the Modern Atlanta Home Tour Tickets – $35). I should note, most of these events can be found on Modern Atlanta’s website. We’re only listing the events intended for the public that are items we’d want to attend – if you’re in the trade, I suggest heading over to their site for details. Also, we have no affiliation with anyone – restaurants, locations, Modern Atlanta, etc – this is just our opinion and where we’d go, and what we’d enjoy. So, enjoy!
Tuesday, June 2nd:
Name: Lights, Camera, Atlanta: Hollywood & Location Design
Time: 6pm-8pm, arrive a little bit early
Location: Room & Board, 1170 Howell Mill Rd NW, Atlanta, Ga 30318
Our Description: As it was described to us – there’s increasingly more films & shows being produced in Atlanta. This is a panel where they’ll discuss various items – mostly centering around having your house as a set for scene in a film or show. It should be pretty neat and well worth attending. It’s free, and it never hurts to go by Room & Board.
Nearby: While near Room & Board, it’s always well worth coming to the area early and going by Switch Modern – it’s literally just down the street. It’s within walking distance if you’d like to walk there, has a wonderful selection of modern furniture and accessories, & closes at 6pm.
Great Food Nearby: Ok, this is just a personal favorite, but we love La Fonda. It’s just down the street from Room & Board, has great cuban food, and is a great price (~$10-$15 per person, if not less). Nearly every time we’re in west midtown, we head over there. Sure, there’s YEAH! Burger and a few others. However, if you haven’t tried it – give La Fonda a try. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Thursday, June 4th:
Name: Modani & Young Design Talent Showcase
Time: 6-9pm
Location: Modani, 3221 Peachtree St., Atlanta, Ga 30305
Our Description: We attended this (or something very similar) last year and really loved it. It’s a showcase for new designers. You’re able to talk to the designers about their work. It really was outstanding last year – it was great to see the up-and-coming individuals in the area. Last year, they also had a discussion panel during the timeframe. Whether or not they have this, it’s still worth attending.
Nearby: While not entirely modern, nearby is a new showroom (ok, building) for Restoration Hardware. We’ve yet to go, but we’ve heard it is an amazing space and worth checking out (especially their paint collection). There’s also Phipps & Lenox Mall just north of Modani that usually have a few items worth seeing.
Great Food Nearby: There are a couple options that we love nearby. First, would be Bricktops – have the mac & cheese, or twice baked potatoes, or the barbecue chicken flatbread (~$15-$20 per person). Second, not far away is The Big Ketch – they offer great seafood and the best boiled peanuts. We don’t even like boiled peanuts, and we like theirs. They’re amazing – and they have a great Catfish PoBoy if that’s your thing (~$15-$20 per person).

Friday, June 5th:
Name: Modern Atlanta Architecture Tour Launch Party
Time: 6pm – 11pm
Location: ADAC, 351 Peachtree Hills Ave NE, Atlanta, Ga 30305
Our Description: So, every year there’s a launch party hosted by Modern Atlanta (and many other vendors). This is where you can meet & greet others interested in modern design within Atlanta. They’ll usually have some featured products as well. Overall, it’s a nice event to attend. I’d dress in cocktail attire or nicer personally, probably cocktail being best.
Nearby: Design Within Reach isn’t far from ADAC and well worth going by beforehand. If you haven’t been to Design Within Reach, it’s mostly iconic & modern design with some new designers mixed in as well.
Great Food Nearby: There are a fair amount of options nearby, but if we had to choose one – we’d hold off on dinner until after the party (ok, somewhat after, really leaving a little early) and go to Holeman & Finch for the 10pm burger. It’s known as one of the best burgers in America. Seriously, it’s amazing. Though, you have to get there early. I’d get there at the latest by 9:30pm, erring closer to 9pm. They only serve 24 burgers per night – if they’re out, they’re out. However, you can go anytime on a Sunday during brunch to have one served to you. (~$10-$15 per person)

Saturday, June 6th:
Name: Self-Guided Modern Atlanta Home Tour!!
Time: 10am-4pm
Locations: See Tickets/Booklet that you get with tickets
Our Description: Ok, this is the whole purpose of the week!! Seeing current, new, real, modern design & architecture within Atlanta. It’s mostly homes, and we love it. There are usually architects, builders, and other professionals on-site that can answer questions that you might have. Also, we strongly recommend getting to your first location AT 10am. This will help you maximize your day. Remember, there are two days to get to see everything. Oh, also, one of our favorite architects that continues to impress us every year has a house on the tour – The Karaga Residence on North Highland Terrace – be sure to leave a little bit of extra time for that one. Dencity’s (the architecture firm) houses always impress. Well, actually, just be glad we have two days to see everything!

Saturday, June 6th:
Name: Premiere of ‘Barbicania’ film
Time: 4:30 – 5:30pm
Location: HUGE Atlanta, 1375 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, Ga 30309
Our Description: So, I’m a little mixed on what I know about this film. The preview doesn’t tell us much other than it’s about experiencing architecture. Also, I don’t know why they would have it start at 4:30pm when the tour ends at 4pm. It seems like starting it at 4:45pm or 5pm would have been better. Nonetheless, it could be outstanding and worth attending. Personally, if I am at an amazing house at 3:50pm, I’m not leaving early. However, if my day is pretty much done and we can be there in time, then we’ll go.
Nearby: The High Museum of Art is just across the street, and CB2 (because, who doesn’t like crate & barrel 2, is a bit more south of there).
Great Food Nearby: There are a lot of options nearby. However, honestly, we’re just not overly impressed with any of them (sorry, it’s probably just been our experience). When in this area, we normally just use the Scoutmob app to find a local deal and go there.

Saturday, June 6th:
Name: MA Talks: Journeys + Paths
Time: 6pm-7:30pm
Location: HUGE Atlanta, 1375 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, Ga 30309
Our Description: This is going to be great!! Seriously, it’s going to be something we wouldn’t miss and will arrive early just to be there ahead of time. It’s a panel of young designers discussing embarking on their careers – the hiccups and successes along the way. If this lasted for four hours, we’d stay the entire time. Seriously, if you are in the least bit interested in hearing about someone else’s profession, how they work, and what it’s like – GO. Just go. At the very least, it’s showing our support to new designers.
Nearby: It’s the same as above, there’s also parks & other items nearby.
Great Food Nearby: Ok, ok, there is one really great restaurant. However, it’s on the pricier side, perhaps $75-$100 per person. It’s called Lure. You’ll want to make reservations ahead of time. It is absolutely amazing food, and we’d highly recommend it.

Sunday, June 7th:
Name: Self-Guided Modern Atlanta Home Tour!!
Time: 10am-4pm
Locations: See Tickets/Booklet that you get with tickets
Our Description: This is your second day to see houses!! From our previous experience, we would suggest finishing up seeing the houses you haven’t seen yet and then going back to the houses you loved. It’s great to see them again the next day – it really helps solidify what you liked. The second day is usually less busy, and you can usually talk with the designers, architects, buildings, and sometimes home-owners a little more on Sunday. So, enjoy!!
